… --Mrs. O. A. STEVER of Newton, Maurice BATES of Ames and Hubert BATES of Ottumwa were called to Fairfield by the death of their father, Perry M. BATES, who has been a patient at the Nelson Nursing home for some time.

BATES Funeral Will Be Monday

Death came last night to Perry Millard BATES, native of Jefferson county and a former long-time employe in the Fairfield community.

He passed away at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Nelson Nursing home. He had been in failing health the past two years and in serious condition the past two months. The family home is at 607 S. Third.

BATES was employed in Fairfield over a 50-year period before his health forced him to retire. He was previously employed for 25 years at the Fair store on the the south side of the square, and for 25 years at the Dexter plant.

Last rites will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Raymond funeral home with the Rev. James Dendler in charge. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

Perry Millard BATES, 86, was born Dec. 4, 1878, on a farm north of Fairfield, son of Jerry and Sarah KERR BATES. He was reared and educated in Fairfield.

BATES was married March 6, 1901, in Fairfield to Gertrude McDONALD (sic - Florence Gertrude). She survives. He was a member of the First Methodist church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Hubert BATES, Ottumwa, and Maurice BATES, Ames; also a daughter, Mrs. Gladys STEVER, Newton; two grandchildren and three great grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Myrtle HYDE, Fairfield.
