Walter SCHANFELDT

Walter SCHANFELDT, 96, of Parkview Care Center died Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.

The funeral is at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield, with the Rev. Ed Parker officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation is 10-11 a.m. Tuesday prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to the Fairfield Public Library. Cards and memorials can be left at the funeral home.

Mr. SCHANFELDT was born March 4, 1917, in Spearville, Kan., the son of Walter and Mary MARKS SCHANFELDT Sr. He married Olive Louise HARRIS May 31, 1941. She died March 30, 1980. He then married Elizabeth CHRISTY in April of 1981.

Mr. SCHANFELDT graduated from Cimmaron High School in Cimmaron, Kan. He graduated from Kanas (sic - Kansas) State University in 1940.

He joined the Navy in September 1941. He served in the North Atlantic on a destroyer. During 1943, he was assigned to the Pacific Theater and was a part of Navy battles leading to Japan.

Mr. SCHANFELDT's hobbies included being an avid reader, working crossword puzzles and watching ball games.

Survivors include his wife Elizabeth SCHANFELDT of Fairfield; one son, Mark SCHANFELDT and wife Judy of Freeport, Ill.; two step-daughters, Ramona PETERSON of Vero Beach, Fla., and Tami CRAFTON of Ottumwa; two grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to his first wife, Mr. SCHANFELDT was preceded in death by: his parents; and two sisters, Bertha Lee STREMEL and Louise COLLINS.
