Dr. Daniel D. HINSON, 82, passed away August 24, 2013, in Des Moines, Iowa.
Dan was born in Fairfield, June 6, 1931 to Ruth and Dr. Roy W. HINSON.
Dr. Dan (as many of his child patients called him) practiced Optometry 41 years in pediatric care. He was a partner in Vision Park Family Eye Care of Urbandale and West Des Moines.
A graduate of Fairfield High School, he took his pre-graduate work at Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and Parsons College, formerly in Fairfield.
He graduated from Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago in 1955, then served in the Medical Service Corps of the U.S. Army at Brooke Army Medical Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.
Returning to Iowa in 1957, he joined in partnership with Dr. Paul W. Thielking in Des Moines.
Dr. HINSON enjoyed helping children and students through the practice of Vision Therapy, lenses and prisms, receiving many referals from around the state.
Dan was a life-long fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Green Bay Packers, and loved to watch games and visit about the teams with friends.
He also loved automobiles, driving and other vacations and anything related to military history.
Dr. HINSON was united in marriage April 5, 1953, to Ann L. PETERSON of Ottumwa. They enjoyed 53 years of marriage and were blessed with five daughters and one son, John, who died in infancy.
He is survived by daughters Valerie (Randy) MOFFATT, of West Des Moines, Julie (Brian) WRIGHT-KILE of Breckenridge, CO., Melissa SLAIKEU of Adel, Kristine (Mitchell) THIELBERT of Bettendorf, and Carrie (Thomas) CUMMINGS of Urbandale; 10 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two stepsons, Michael WYNNE of West Des Moines and John WYNNE of Austria.
He married Nicky WYNNE of West Des Moines on July 26, 2008.
Besides his parents and infant son, he was preceded in death by his wife Ann, and brothers Dr. Rex W. HINSON of Marshalltown and Philip HINSON of Washington, D.C.
Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 28 at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel in Des Moines. A funeral service will be at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 12th and Grand, West Des Moines at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 29. Burial with military honors will be at Resthaven Ceneter, West Des Moines.
Memorials are suggested to Des Moines Host Lions Club Foundation or St. Mark Lutheran Church.
There will be baskets available at both the funeral home and the church to collect used eyeglasses to be donated to the Lions Club for distribution around the world.
Arrangements are being handled by Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel in Des Moines.
