PACKWOOD - William "Bill" Russell SASSEEN, 86, of Packwood, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 1996, at Parkview Care Center in Fairfield, where he had been a resident for the past 2 1/2 years.
The service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Fremont Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Clarkson officiating. Burial will be in Packwood Cemetery. Family visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel. Justice Lodge 230 AF and AM of Ollie will conduct a Masonic service at 7 that evening. Memorials have been established to Packwood First Responders and Packwood Volunteer Fire Department.
SASSEEN was born Dec. 20, 1909, in Keokuk County, the son of Austin and Emma PAXSON SASSEEN. He graduated from Batavia High School. On Aug. 17, 1933, he married Lola McBURNEY in Mount Pleasant. She died March 23, 1942. On Oct. 26, 1945, he married Ina BOOK in Fairfield. He had been a truck driver for Harold Dickey Trucking. He was a member of Justice Lodge 230 AF and AM and for a number of years was involved with the Packwood Volunteer Fire Department.
Surviving are his wife; a son, John of Cypress, Texas; six daughters, Joyce BROWN of LaFaria, Texas, Janet FARRIER of Brighton, Sandra VOGEL of Indianola, Donna SASSEEN of Iowa City, Debra WONDERLICH of Grimes, Martha CHANDLER of Packwood; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Dale of Richland; two sisters, Margaret ROBERTS and Mabel WOLCOTT, both of Richland. A grandson, a brother, Houston; and a sister, Vera HUBER; preceded him in death.
