Bates and wife, he departed from Jefferson County on the morning of Dec 5th for a visit with his children in Kansas. . . . .Born in the state of New Jersey, removed with his parents to Butler Co., Ohio, where he was married to Elizabeth Murell. In 1847 he, with his parents, his brother Ephraim, and brother-in-law, Francis Conley (Connelly), with their families, removed to Jefferson County, Iowa. With our mother and four brothers, father lived on a farm in Cedar township, and at this home two sisters were born, Mrs. Graham of Fairfield, and Mrs. Launchbaugh of Kansas. Here mother died later, leaving a sorrow-stricken father and six motherless children. . . . .In course of time (17 May 1855) father married Mrs. Mame Murray, and to them were born four sons and two daughters, two of the former dying in infancy.
