J. Arlene PEIFFER

J. Arlene PEIFFER, 86, of Fairfield and formerly of Washington, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 25, 2013, in the care of Mercy Hospice in Iowa City after a short illness.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Stephen Page officiating. Interment is at Clear Creek Cemetery in rural Harper (note: in Keokuk County, IA).

Visitation begins at noon Friday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa, with family receiving friends 4-8 p.m.

Memorials have been established for the Richland Public Library or St. Mary Catholic Church.

Mrs PEIFFER was born Jan. 5, 1927, in Wellman, the daughter of Glen Laurence and Ethel Vearle TRACY DUTTON. She married Edward J. HAMMES Sept. 6, 1949, in Sigourney. He died in 1980. She married Edwin John PEIFFER Aug. 7, 1982, in Washington, Iowa. He died in 2006.

She grew up and lived in the Richland community. She graduated from Richland High School in 1945.

She received a bachlor of arts degree in English from Parsons College in Fairfield in 1949.

She was proud to be a farm wife.

She attended St. Mary Catholic Church in Fairfield. She was a former member of St. James Catholic Church.

She was also a member of the Altar and Rosary Society at Mother Cabrini Catholic Church in Richland.

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Whiteway Club and the Prairie Painters Club.

Mrs. PEIFFER loved china painting. She enjoyed her garden and flowers, and she loved reading. She loved animals, especially her dog Susie. She enjoyed spending time outdoors.

She was a great ballroom dancer, and she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Jean Anne SEMSCH and her husband Jay of Stockton and Catherine Lynn GREINER and her husband Tony of Keota; one son, Pat HAMMES and his wife Tracy of Batavia; one daughter-in-law, Rosemary HAMMES of Richland; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded in death by one son, John HAMMES; one great-grandson; two infant brothers; one half-brother Harold DUTTON; and one half-sister Eloise BEEHLER.
