Saturday, June 2, 1973Death Takes Pete STAVES
Peter H. STAVES, native of Greece and retired Fairfield businessman, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Jefferson County Hospital about 7:30 p.m. Friday.
STAVES became suddenly ill at his home, 701 S. Sixth, and was rushed to the hospital by ambulance.
The body is at the Weston Behner Funeral Home where last rites are pending.
Born in Greece, STAVES came to the United States during his younger years and had lived in the Fairfield Community for over 62 years. He and his brother, the late Tom STAVES, owned and operated the Purity Cafe on the west side of the square for 43 years.
Peter Harold STAVES, 82, was born July 6, 1890 at Kapsia, Mantineias, Greece, the son of Harold and Katherine CHIOLES STAVROPOULOS. He changed his last name to STAVES when he came to the United States.
He was married Sept. 11, 1927, at Davenport to Helen N. TSAMOURA, who survives.
Other survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy HARRISON, Marengo, Ill.; two sons, John STAVES, Athens, Greece; Nicholas STAVES, Des Moines; four grandchildren; and a sister, Jane KOTSELAS, Greece. He was preceded in death by four brothers.
STAVES was a veteran of World War I, charter member of the VFW, member of the Elks, Legion and Knights of Pythias.
Efforts were being made this morning to contact his son, John, who is in Greece.
