Orval S. HECKENBERG, 88, of 507 E. Pierce Ave., Fairfield, died at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at Parkview Care Center in Fairfield.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Fairfield, with the Rev. Jim Witherspoon officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be at Lockridge Cemetery in Lockridge.

Family visitation will be held from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church.

Mr. HECKENBERG was born April 20, 1913, in Lake Andies, S.D., the son of Henry and Alta SHELMAN HECKENBERG. He married Ila ATWATER Oct. 3, 1945, in Galesburg, Ill.

Mr. HECKENBERG lived most of his life in Fairfield, with previous residences in Galesburg, Ill., and Lockridge. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1931.

He served in the United States Army during World War II in Hawaii. He was a light-equipment operator at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown for more than 20 years. He and his wife operated Heckenberg Cash and Carry Grocery Store in Lockridge for more than 10 years.

He was a member of American Legion Post No. 47 in Fairfield.

He was a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Dick HECKENBERG of Vienna, Austria, Gene HECKENBERG of Algonquin, Ill., and Donald HECKENBERG of Burlington; one daughter, Renee PFEIFER of Richland; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Carl, John and twin Otto HECKENBERG; and two sisters, Macel HECKENBERG and Mildred YOUNG.
