John Alyn CRAWFORD, 87, formerly of Fairfield, died at Solon Care Center in Solon, today, Monday, April 8, 2013.

John Alyn CRAWFORD

John Alyn CRAWFORD, 87, formerly of Fairfield, died Monday, April 8, 2013, at Solon Care Center in Solon.

The funeral is set for 10:30 a.m. Friday at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield, with the Rev. Stacy Grau officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends is 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church, University of Iowa Foundation or Mercy Hospital Foundation.

Mr. CRAWFORD was born June 7, 1925, in Fairfield, the son of Byron C. and Mabel Elizabeth LUNDQUIST CRAWFORD.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. He attended signal school in San Diego before being transferred as a signalman to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, to serve on the USS Gambier Bay. The USS Gambier Bay was deployed in the South Pacific. In 1944, his ship and four others met up with the Japanese Fleet in Laite Gulfe, east of the island of Leyte, part of the Philippines. The five U.S. ships were sunk within two hours, leaving 3,000 men in the water, floating for 45 hours before being rescued.

Mr. CRAWFORD served the rest of his Navy time in Bremerton, Wash.

Upon returning to Iowa, he attended the University of Iowa and graduated in 1950, with a bachelor of science degree.

He lived in Chicago nine years where he was empoyed by Chicago Title and Trust, as well as Advanced Mortgage Corporation.

He returned to Iowa City in 1960 to take a position as an accountant in the University of Iowa business office. He retired from there in 1988.

He supported Mercy Hospital Foundation, establishing the Crawford Cancer Teaching Conference, which meets weekly and helps to assist oncologists with cancer treatment decisions.

He was a supporter and friend to the University of Iowa Foundation, the Iowa City Public Library, and First Lutheran Church in Fairfield.

Survivors include one sister-in-law, Joyce CATHEY of Davenport.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
