Carol Elizabeth NELSON, 84, of Fairfield, died Saturday April 6, 2013, at Sunnybrook Living Care Center.
A funeral is at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at New Sweden United Methodist Church in Lockridge, with the Rev. Melissa Bracht-Wagner and the Rev. Diane Brokken officiating. Burial will be in New Sweden United Methodist Cemetery.
Visitation for family and friends will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield.
Memorials may be made to, Hospice Compassus of Cedar Rapids, New Sweden Cemetery Association or the donor's choice. Cards and memorials can be sent to 2879 193rd Blvd., Fairfield 52556.
Mrs. NELSON was born Dec. 29, 1928, in Fairfield, the daughter of Joseph and Laura FRITZ BUCKINGHAM. She married Willard Sylvester NELSON Feb. 5, 1949, in rural Jefferson County. He died July 20, 1989.
She was a life-long resident of Jefferson County.
She was a homemaker and had worked for the senior site in Lockridge.
Mrs. NELSON was a member of the Rebecca lodge in Salina.
She taught Sunday school. She had been treasurer for the New Sweden United Methodist Church for more than 30 years and also was treasurer for the New Sweden Cemetery Association.
She was a member of New Sweden United Methodist Church.
Survivors include four sons, Allen NELSON and spouse Julie, Joe NELSON and spouse Sandy, all of Fairfield, Ed NELSON and spouse Sheryl of Lockridge and Steve NELSON and spouse Jean Ann of Good Hope, Ill.; two daughters, Barbara SMOOT and spouse Randell of Leonard, Mo., and Rhonda NELSON and spouse Craig MAYER of Sedro Wooley, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; eight siblings, Aletha HAY of West Burlington, Ruth HOYT of Ottumwa, Helen NEFF of West Lake Village, Ca., twin sister Della TAYLOR of Mount Pleasant, Edith GAUBY of Nanpa (sic - Nampa), Idaho, Bernice OGDEN of Fairfield, Christine BOYENGA of Merced, Calif., and Doris "Dee" EPERSON of St. Francis, Kan.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Lois SHOOK; and two brothers, Frank and Glen BUCKINGHAM
