Elsie M. PAYNE

Elsie M. PAYNE, 69, of 1101 E. Burlington Ave., died at 8:18 p.m. Tuesday, Aug 18, 1992, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

She was born Feb. 10, 1923, in Walahalla, N.D., the daughter of John C. and Veronica BRUCE BARTLETTE. She married Charles T. PAYNE on Aug. 15, 1953, in Duluth, Minn. He survives.

PAYNE lived most of her life in the Fairfield community. She was a veteran of the Womens Air Corp, serving in World War II. She was a homemaker and a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Eagles Lodge.

Surviving are two sons, A. Jeff PAYNE of Fairfield and John C. PAYNE of Lublin, Colo.; one granddaughter; two brothers, Patrick BARTLETTE of Tucson, Ariz.; and three sisters, Louise SOBY of St. Paul, Minn., Mary SCOTT of Walahalla and Lillian BERTHELETTE of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Beatrice, Bernadette and Julia; and one brother, John.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Behner Funeral Home, the Rev. James E. Grubb officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Family visitation is 7 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. The casket will be closed. Memorials may be made to the VFW Avenue of Flags.
