MATTHIAS rites

Services for Vernon Nelson MATTHIAS, 78, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. James Batty(sp) officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

MATTHIAS died at 8:17 a.m. Thursday at the Ottumwa Hospital where he had been a patient since May 29.

Vernon Nelson MATTHIAS was born July 13, 1902, in Van Buren County, the son of William W. and Myrtle GIRE MATTHIAS. He was united in marriage to Lola A. MILLER who preceded him in death.

A retired Dexter Co., employee, he had made his home in Fairfield since 1945. The family home is at 808 W. Depot.

He is survived by three sons, Peter, Fairfield; Leonard, Centerville; Verle, Ottumwa; one daughter, Betty MATTHIAS, Fairfield; 18 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack MATTHIAS, Moline, Ill.; and a sister, Etta HAWBAKER, Farmersville, Texas.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three sons, one daughter and a sister.
