January 21, 2004Esther M. Waddell, 87, of Davenport died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, in her home.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Runge Mortuary and Crematory.
Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Waddell was born Sept. 16, 1916, in Bettendorf, the daughter of Axel and Idella Bell Stride. She married Raymond E. Waddell Sept. 23, 1935, in Rock Island, Ill. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Waddell held various positions including being a factory worker during World War II, helping her husband on the farm and being a co-worker at several other businesses. She and her husband had a tire retreading business, ran both City Lunch and Park Grill diners, Ray Waddell and Sons Metal Buyers, and B & C Auto Wreckers. In the early 1970s, they moved to Harris, Mo., and renovated a ballroom to include a diner, steak house and dance hall. In 1975, they moved back to Davenport and retired. Her pastimes included sewing, crossword puzzles and gambling aboard the boats.
Survivors include two sons, Raymond E. Waddell Jr. and wife Florence and John T. Waddell and wife Margie; one daughter, Sharon R. Tank and husband Robert; one daughter-in-law, JoAnn Waddell; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Viola Heisel of Stockport.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Gene P. Waddell, and one granddaughter.
