John A. Schinstock, 84, of rural Salem died at 11:23 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Johns Catholic Church in Houghton, with Friar Dennis Hoffman officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. Thursday at the church. A rosary will be held at 3 p.m. and a Christian vigil service will be recited at 7 p.m. at the church. The family will receive friends from 2:30-4 p.m. and from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to St. John's Catholic Church.

Link Funeral Home in West Point is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schinstock was born June 9, 1919, in Houghton, the son of Theodore and Margaret Stuekerjuerjen Schinstock. He married Zita Marie Menke Aug. 22, 1944, at St. James Catholic Church in St. Paul, Iowa.

Mr. Schinstock was a lifelong resident of Houghton and a retired farmer. His lifelong hobby was playing the accordion. For many years he and his wife played for friends, at weddings and anniversaries and in local nursing homes after he retired.

He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, a 19-year member of the church choir and the Knights of Columbus in Houghton.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Ray Schinstock and wife Marilyn of Salem, Mike Schinstock and wife Donna of Donnellson and Joe Schinstock and wife Cindy of Salem; four daughters, Pat Daufeldt and husband Don of West Liberty, Diana Menke and husband Paul of Fort Madison, Maria Hamm and husband Glenn of Fairfield and Johnita Vorwaldt and husband Randy of Fort Madison; 22 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Ed Schinstock of West Point.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and four sisters.
