Veteran Guard general GREENFIELD dies here at 86

Leonard R. GREENFIELD, native of Jefferson County and a retired brigadier general of the Iowa National Guard and U.S. Army, died at 2:10 a.m. today at the Jefferson County Hospital. He had been in failing health for the past year.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. William H. Sullivan officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery where military rites will be conducted.

GREENFIELD's career as a soldier spanned a period 32 years which included service during three wars, the Mexican Border Campaign, First and Second World Wars. He filled every rank from private to brigadier general. He held that rank when given a medical discharge in 1946.

He enlisted in Company M, Iowa National Guard, in Fairfield in 1914. The unit was called into service in 1916 and joined troops at the Mexican border to quell raids by Pancho Villa. The unit was mustered out at Des Moines in January, 1917.

Two months later the unit was mobilized and on March 26, 1917, again began federal service. The unit finally faced front line action in France, and returned to the United States in 1919, following World War I.

GREENFIELD continued in the National Guard and graduated from a course for officers at Fort Benning, Ga., in 1939 and from the command and general staff school in 1940.

Gen. GREENFIELD was with the first contingent of U.S. troops which landed in Ireland in January, 1942, during World War II.

He was detailed to England to organize troops and hold schools for troops arriving from the states. After suffering a heart attack he was sent home where he served at Fort McClellan, Ala.; Camp Rucker, Ala., and Washington, D.C. until the war ended.

GREENFIELD was born April 11, 1895, in Jefferson County, the son of James and Rachel HENDRICKS GREENFIELD.

He was married Oct. 11, 1921, to Gertrude KNOPP. She died April 18, 1972. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. Survivors include two daughters, Mary LOVING, Bettendorf; Ruth PISTOLE, Okeechobee, Fla.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by five brothers.
