Isabelle M. JOHNSON

Isabelle M. JOHNSON, 97, of Fairfield died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013 at the Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Haverland and the Rev. Nate Nims officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends is 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Behner Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church. Cards and memorials may be sent to: 1705 Linden Drive, Apt. A, Fairfield 52556.

Mrs. JOHNSON was born on July 27, 1915, in Lynn Grove, the daughter of Samuel and Isabella WOODBURN WILEY. She married Howard JOHNSON May 5, 1940.

She attended elementary school in Lebanon, Iowa and graduated from Keosauqua High School, class of 1934, with a normal training certificate, which allowed her to teach elementary school.

After marrying, the couple first lived in Salina and soon after, moved to Fairfield.

She began teaching elementary children at Bonaparte, Van Buren County and Center No. 9.

She returned to school and earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Parsons College in 1959. She taught third grade at Washington School for 27 years, 35 years in total. She retired from teaching in 1981.

She was active in the Fairfield community and was a member of many bowling teams and played golf for many years.

She donated much time to the Girls Scouts (sic) and Brownies, the Jefferson County Republican Women, W.C.T.U., Women's Bowling Association, Women's Golf Association, Lionels and Lions Club.

She was a dedicated Sunday school teacher at the First United Methodist Church for 34 years.

She enjoyed creating and sewing quilts; she made more than 21 hand-stitched quilts, which she gave to family and friends (.)

Survivors include her husband Howard JOHNSON of Fairfield; two children, Jean LEDVINA and spouse Tim of Gainesville, Fla., and Howard JOHNSON and spouse Lois of Altoona; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildern (sic).

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Samuel, James and Robert; and three sisters, Jane, Josephine and Margaret.
