Lois Jean KALER KEHRL

Lois Jean KALER KEHRL, 76 of Fairfield, passed away peacefully Thursday, February 14, 2013, in her home surrounded by loving friends. Lois was born to George and Katherine (DuBOIS) KALER on March 19, 1936, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She married Robert KEHRL in 1959. They divorced in 1978. After receiving her degree in Music from the University of Michigan, she taught music and Great Books to elementary school students in the Bedford Public School district of Monroe County, Michigan. She raised her family in Toledo, Ohio, where her husband taught at the University of Toledo.

Lois moved to Fairfield, Iowa, in the early 1980s, where she taught music at the Maharishi School and private piano and singing lessons to many in the Fairfield community. Lois took great pride in her home and beautiful garden, and was unfailingly generous sharing her knowledge of flowers and plants both with novice and experienced gardeners. She loved playing the piano, especially hymns at church, and with all of her music students; gardening and the Garden Gazers group; and her book club friends, past and present.

Lois never stopped learning. She deeply loved and appreciated beauty in nature and the simplest things. Lois also loved to travel, spend time with friends, walk the trails and parks of Fairfield, swim at the recreation center and enjoy a cup of coffee with friends at Revelations Café. Her cat, Muffy, was a faithful companion.

Lois is survived by her son, David KEHRL of San Diego; her daughter, Greta KEHRL of Ypsilanti, Michigan; a brother, Roger KEHRL (sic - KALER?) of Grand Rapids, Michigan; a sister, Cathy WARNER of Morley, Michigan; and all of her beloved friends, near and far. And kitty, Muffy. Lois was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, George KALER.

Memorial contributions may be made to the art and music department at the Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment, Noah's Ark Foundation or ICON art gallery.

A memorial service is planned for 7:30 p.m. Friday, February 22, at the Fellowship of the Holy Spirit building, 51 N. Court St., (east side of the square), Fairfield.
