Joseph Michael "Mike" Lathrop, 56, of Wapello, died Friday morning, Jan. 9, 2004, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington following an early morning fire in Wapello that included his residence.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello, with the Rev. Dan Doolin officiating. Burial will be in Wapello Cemetery.

Visitation began at noon today and will continue until 8 p.m. at the funeral home, with the family present from 7-8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Wapello Rescue Unit.

Mr. Lathrop was born Jan. 11, 1947, in Fairfield, the son of Ernest and Betty Lyons Lathrop.

Mr. Lathrop graduated from Fairfield High School in 1965. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He worked at the Heinz Company in Muscatine.

He was a member of Indian Hills Golf and Country Club and Ducks Unlimited. He played football and baseball and his pastimes included golfing, bowling, playing pool and hunting and fishing with friends and family.

Survivors include one daughter Tammy Hayes and husband Brian of rural Columbus Junction; one son, Michael Shane Lathrop of Wapello; four grandchildren; his mother of Mount Pleasant; one sister, Karen Anderson of Mount Pleasant; and one brother, Jack Lathrop of Fairfield.

He was preceded in death by his father and one sister, Delores Sue Cavin.
