Richard Michael VITTETOE

FARSON-Richard Michael VITTETOE, 87, of 207 Manor Dr. in Osceola and formerly of Farson, died December 31, 2012 at his home.

He was born October 23, 1925 in Keota, Iowa to John Peter and Irene Dorothy PEIFFER VITTETOE. He married Ardyce Fay WAVRIN on July 19, 1946 at Chula Vista, CA having met through the USO.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran during World War II serving as Seamen (sic - Seaman) First Class receiving 3 Bronze Stars and 1 Silver Survivor Star. He survived the sinking USS Princeton a day after his 19th birthday.

He farmed north of Oskaloosa for 16 years on the E.B. Wilcox family farm. He and his wife owned & operated Platime Supper Club near Rose Hill in 1962-63 and then continued farming near Farson in 1963 until moving to Osceola in 2010. Currently his grandson operates the farm.

He was a member of St. Mary of the Visitation, the Arendt-Bowlin-Stubbs Post #83 of the American Legion and a member of Farm Bureau.

Surviving are his wife, Ardyce; five daughters, Cheryl (Gene) BARNETTE of Overland Park, KS, Mary Sue (Michael) NOONE of Leavenworth, KS, Dr. Fay A. (Dr. Mary A. ANSON) VITTETOE of Brighton, Debora J. (Howard) ADRIAN of Fairfield and Tina M. (Tom) BULLINGTON of Wichita Falls, TX; 7 grandchildren, Christina YOCHUM, Scott (Deb) RUGGLES, Veronica (Brandon) EIGHMY, Anthony (Sara) ADRIAN, Tina ADRIAN, Justian (Darla) MYERS and Jaquelyn MYERS; 12 great grandchildren, Logan YOCHUM, Lauren & Erin RUGGLES, Tanner, Ashlynn & Owen ADRIAN, Lincoln, Harrison & Blythe EIGHMY and Amya, Kaedyn & Kolt MYERS; 2 brothers, Edwin (Diana) VITTETOE of Washington, IA and Ray (Margaret) VITTETOE of Ottumwa; 2 sisters, Rose Mae (Leon) LEINEN of Des Moines and Virginia (Eugene) WEBER of Harper; many nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers, James & Alvin VITTETOE and an infant brother and a sister, Dorothy SIEREN WHITE.

Funeral mass will be 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary of the Visitation in Ottumwa with Father Bernie Weir presiding. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa.

Open visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa. A Christian Wake service will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home followed by family visitation until 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Seton Schools in Ottumwa or Friends at Lake Darling, P.O. Box 82, Brighton, IA 52540.
