Oldest county resident dies; title passes to Ensminger

Ensminger, 100, now oldest person in Jefferson County.

One hundred and one year old Frances Hite, the oldest known resident of Jefferson County, died at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday at Jefferson County Hospital Long-term Care Unit, where she had been a patient for 23 years.

According to the Iowa Department of Elder Affairs, the title of oldest county resident now passes to Mae Ensminger.

Ensminger is a resident of Nelson Nursing Home. She will be celebrating her 101st birthday Jan. 22.

The late Mrs. Hite was born Feb. 18, 1902, near Batavia, the daughter of Riley and Kate Peebler Parker. She grew up in Batavia, and married Harold Hite April 22, 1922. They farmed in the County Line community south of Batavia until retiring to Fairfield in 1967. Mr. Hite died May 14, 1977.

The funeral for Mrs. Hite was held at 2 p.m. today at Batavia United Methodist Church, with burial in Batavia Cemetery. An obituary was published in The Ledger Wednesday.

Mrs. Hite had become the oldest Jefferson County resident when 102-year-old Inez Mae Glotfelty, also of the Jefferson County Hospital Long-term Care Unit, died Dec. 18.
