Donald Lee JOHNSON

Donald Lee JOHNSON, 66, of Mount Pleasant, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at his residence.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant with the Rev. Herbert G. Shafer officiating. Friends are invited to join the family for a lunch in the church's fellowship hall immediately following the funeral. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in the Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk with military honors conducted by the Iowa Funeral Honors Detail.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant with the family present 6-8 p.m.

Mr. JOHNSON was born Feb. 9, 1946, in Brighton, the son of Charles Edward and Nita Faye HODSON JOHNSON. He married Marcene Kay MORRIS Dec. 11, 1965, in Stockport. The couple later divorced. He married Cheryl Lee HOLMES WATSON Feb. 11, 1988, in Mount Pleasant. The couple later divorced.

He graduated from Birmingham High School in 1964.

Mr. JOHNSON was inducted into the United States Army July 24, 1964. He was assigned to the 331st Signal Company, 4th Battalion, United States Army. He was honorably discharged to the United States Army Reserves July 23, 1967, at Fort Polk, La.

He returned home to work for the Amana Corporation. He also worked on a farm near Stockport before taking a job at the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant in Middletown. He worked as a boiler technician for Borax Soap Company in Burlington, which later became the Dial Soap Company, for more than 30 years. He also worked in maintenance for the Amerihost Motel in Mount Pleasant and at Nypro in Mount Pleasant until he retired in 2004.

He was a member and past president of the labor union at Borax.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars #2561, both of Mount Pleasant.

He was an avid fisher and bowler. He loved to fish at Geode State Park and belonged to bowling leagues in both Burlington and Mount Pleasant. He enjoyed watching the New York Mets, the Iowa Hawkeyes, NASCAR and attending the Burlington Bees games.

Survivors include two sons, Brion JOHNSON and wife Carolin of Tampa, Fla., and Darrin JOHNSON and spouse Mandy of Woodward; two daughters, Kim JOHNSON of Moline, Ill., and Kami CONLEY and husband Joshua of Dubuque; four brothers, Richard JOHNSON of Fairfield, Raymond JOHNSON of Birmingham, Dennis JOHNSON of Milwaukee, Wis., and Jeffery JOHNSON of Lockridge; two sisters, Diana KEMP, and Kathy KUHLENBECK both of Mount Pleasant; 10 grandchildren; and eight stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
