Three men die in car accident

A one-car crash at 10:20 p.m. Wednesday west of Fairfield has claimed the lives of three area young men.

Iowa State Patrol reports Martin Lee Durflinger, 23, of Ottumwa, was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro west on Old Highway 34 at a high rate of speed and failed to negotiate a curve near Hemlock Avenue. Durflinger lost control of the vehicle, struck a light pole and rolled numerous times.

The vehicle came to rest in the south ditch, ejecting two passengers and trapping the driver, Durflinger.

The two passengers were Robbie D. Abel, 23, of Hedrick and Harry R. BLODGETT, 21, of Brighton. The three men were killed as a result of the crash.

Durflinger was wearing a seatbelt; his two passengers did not wear seatbelts according to the state patrol report.

The Fairfield Fire Department responded to the scene at 10:27 p.m. with six firefighters and the Jaws of Life equipment. They were on site until 1:30 a.m. today.

Iowa State Patrol is continuing an investigation.
