Assumed from a Fairfield paper; she died September 23, 1941.
MRS. LUCY BATES
Mrs. Lucy BATES, former Fairfield resident, 74, Tekamah, Neb., last “Gold Star Mother,” succumbed to a stroke of paralysis, at her home last Tuesday night, following an illness of heart trouble. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon from the Scager (sic-Schafer) and Peck funeral home at two o’clock in charge of the Rev. Paul Wiegman, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran church. A quartet, Mrs. W. G. Brune, Mrs. H. A. Loerch, Wm. Bobbitt and Dr. L. Morrow furnished the music, and the pallbearers who carried her to her last resting place beside her husband in Tekamah Cemetery, were Odd Fellows.
A coincidence with the date of the death of Mrs. BATES, was that it occurred on the same day of the month, Sept. 23, as her son Orville BATES, World War veteran, who died at the Great Lakes Training Station, near Chicago, Sept. 23, 1918. Ever since the organization of the American Legion Auxiliary, Mrs. BATES took an active part and was its chaplain at the time of her demise.
Lucy WORKMAN, daughter of William and Dora WORKMAN, was born at Fairfield, Iowa, Feb. 10, 1867. She was united in marriage with James K. BATES, Oct. 20, 1887. Mr. and Mrs. BATES and family moved to Tekamah, Oct. 15, 1907. Mr. BATES died Aug. 20, 1923 (sic - see the second note below); a daughter, Cecil (sic - Cecile), died April 7, 1906. The other children who survive their mother and who were all present before her death are: Mrs. Altha BRADFORD, Ottumwa, Iowa; Mrs. Marie WEST, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Mable BRAUN, Tekamah; Rollo BATES, Denver, Colo.; Harold BATES, Golden, Colo.; and Arthur BATES, Tekamah. She also leaves two sisters Mrs. Nellie ANDERSON, Tekamah, and Mrs. Kate WHEELER of Kansas City, Mo.; and one brother Will WORKMAN of Tekamah, who also were at her side. Mr. Miles BRADFORD, husband of Mrs. Altha BRADFORD arrived here Wednesday evening from Ottumwa, Iowa, to be present at the funeral services.
Mrs. BATES was a member of the Presbyterian church, W.R.C., and the Rebekah lodge, in addition to the American Legion Auxiliary, and she remained active in these organizations up to the last. Her demise removes from the city of Tekamah a pioneer mother, whose greatest pleasure was in bringing comfort and happiness to others.

NOTE: Lucy WORKMAN and James K. BATES and her sister, Lena WORKMAN, and Scott John CHARLTON were married in a double ceremony Oct. 20, 1887 in Tekamah, Nebraska. The WORKMAN family had moved from Buchanan township, Jefferson county, Iowa to Tekamah in 1886. The two men were from Buchanan township, Jefferson County, Iowa.
Note two: James' date of death is incorrect here, per Jane KNAPP; the 1930 census shows him with his family, and newspaper articles about a tornado in Tekamah, NE, on May 1, 1930, refer to him. He is estimated to have died (as of this posting) between 1938 and 1941, as another local obituary for Lucy states "Mr. BATES passed away there about three years ago."
