Death of Their Darling.

Died at the home of her parents, near Beckwith, on April 6, 1006 (sic - 1906), Cecil Love BATES. It is with sadness that we feel called upon to chronicle the death of this sweet little pet.

Cecil Love was the youngest child of James K. and Lucy BATES, and was three years old. The sickness was of short duration, lasting only 24 hours, when the death angel came and called her home. The little one had taken a slight cold, but was not considered dangerous until the morning before her death, when Dr. Carpenter was called and pronounced it diphtheria. All was done that could be done, but it was not to be. Anti-toxine was used, but it was not to be. Antitoxine was used but all to no avail.

All night the family hovered about their little darling, with anxiety deepening into hopeless anguish, as they watched the almost cheerful fight being made against the deadly destroying malady. With but little warning the unequal conflict was ended Saturday morning at 8 o’clock, and the light went out of the home when little Cecil died. It is doubly sad, as the family was at once placed under quarantine, and their many friends and neighbors were unable to be with them or do anything for them. The little pet had to be buried the same afternoon. Death at all times is sad, and doubly so when no one can be near to sympathize nor help.

Little Cecil was more like a beautiful bud, too delicate for the rude winds of earth and far fitter to unfold in Heaven. There is the vacant chair in the home which none can replace. But now in the arms of the Heavenly Father, her brief pilgrimage in this world’s vale of tears is ended.

Little Cecil awaits in joy and everlasting peace the coming thither of those who enshrined her in their hearts on earth. The sympathy of the community goes out to the grief stricken family.

"Death has robbed us of our Cecil,
Whom we loved and cherished so,
It was Cecil! Yes, dear Cecil,
Can we help but shed a tear."

Yes, we miss her. How we miss her
None on earth can tell,
But the blessed Lord has called her
To go home with Him to dwell.

Death of a Beckwith Baby.

Died, east of Fairfield, Saturday, April 7, 1906, of diptheria (sic - diphtheria), Cecil, youngest child of J. K. and Lucy BATES, aged three years and seven days(.) Now, mother and father, lay aside those playthings which she will use no more; they will tear anew the broken heart and cause it to bleed again with sorrow. But kind friends let these lines console you:

Cecil is in Heaven

Cross the little taper fingers,
On the baby's snowy breast;
Close the waxen lids so tender,
Where we oft have kisses pressed.
List! a whispered thought of music
Falls upon our hearts at even--
Little sinless, gentle Cecil,
Rests in Heaven

Oh! her birdlike voice of music
Oh! her cunning little feet,
Clinging arms and gentle kisses
We on earth no more shall meet.
How we miss our household angle (sic),
Miss her baby smiles and tears,
Miss the flowers of hope we cherished
For the busy coming years.

Ah! fond parents dry your teardrops,
Mourn not that life chords were riven
Little Cecil, angel Cecil
Dwells with Christ, high up in Heaven

Friend H.

Note: The headstone inscription is clearly "Cecile", but the obituaries and other sources for this child use "Cecil" for the first name. Her inscription is at the far bottom of the massive Bates monument in the Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield, IA. It is likely that it was put in place in anticipation of the burial for James and Lucy Bates. They eventually were buried in Tekamah, NE. There is a smallish headstone to the west of this monument that is likely an individual and original headstone for this child. Her mother Lucy's maiden name was WORKMAN.
