SARAH MCCARTY 94, LONG-TIME RESIDENT, DIES
Had spent entire life in this county; services are Friday

Sarah A. McCARTY, 94, pioneer Jefferson county resident, passed away at her home, 409 North Court street, early this morning. She had been in lingering illness for quite some time.

Mrs. McCARTY was born in this county on April 6, 1844 and had spent her entire life in Jefferson county.

Mr. McCARTY died in 1909. Mrs. McCARTY moved to Fairfield 3 years ago from the McCARTY farm four and one-half miles northeast of here. She had been a member of the Methodist church for 85 years.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Lida THOMPSON and a son Floyd, both of Fairfield. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Hoskins Funeral Home in charge of Dr. M. A. Gable. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.

SARAH A. McCARTY

Sarah A. McCARTY pioneer resident of Jefferson county was born April 6, 1844 and passed away Wednesday morning, March 22, 1939 at her home 409 North Court street after a short illness. Her husband David McCARTY and two sons Morgan of Fairfield and Seth of Grand Junction, Colo. preceded her in death. She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Lida THOMPSON and a son Lloyd of Fairfield; eleven grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn her loss.

She was born, raised and lived about four and one-half miles north of Fairfield until 13 years ago when she moved to Fairfield. She was a faithful member of the Methodist church for 85 years and was always found doing her duty wherever needed. The funeral services were held at the Hoskins funeral home Friday, March 24, at 2:00 p.m. in charge of Dr. M. A. Gable.

Ellery Kyle sang “Safe in the Arms of Jesus” and “Rock of Ages” accompanied by Miss Ruth Routson at the piano.

The pallbearers were: W. A. Charlton, R. S. Warner, E. C. Flinspach, A. V. Frazey, William Wells, W. S. Shaw. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery.

NOTE: Sarah Ann McCARTY's parents were John W. WORKMAN and his first wife, Amanda Jane KERR. John W. WORKMAN was born July 30, 1819 in Adair County, Kentucky (Family Bible) and died Oct. 11, 1890 in Ottumwa, Iowa. He married Amanda Jane KERR on Dec. 24, 1840 in Jefferson County, Iowa. Amanda KERR was born in 1821 in Knoxville, White County, Tennessee (Family Bible) and died Sept. 25, 1846, in Buchanan township. Jefferson County, Iowa. Both are buried in the Upper Richwoods Cemetery in Buchanan township, Jefferson County, Iowa.

Admin. note: Husband David died in 1909 and is buried in Wheeler Cemetery, also known as McCarty Cemetery. Sarah shares her gravestone in Evergreen Cemetery with their son Morgan, who died in 1932; they are in Lot 2nd.077.
