ELIJAH ROMACK

Packwood, la., Nov. 28.—Elijah ROMACK was born March 5, 1850, in Jefferson county, Iowa, two and one-half miles southwest of his late residence, where he passed away.

His parents, Thomas and Elizabeth BLACK ROMACK, were from Indiana. They came to Iowa in 1840, and settled in Jefferson county. The state was then in its infancy, having been admitted to the union but three years before. Here these industrious young folk from the Hoosier state set themselves to build a worthy home, and an imperishable name for the community. But in seven short years after their coming, the wife and mother was taken to the better world, passing February 17, 1856. She left four small children, as follows: Elijah, Samuel B., George and Frank. The father joined the mother February 15, 1893.

The three brothers Elijah, Samuel and George, have always resided in this community, where they were born. The youngest brother, Frank has resided for a number of years near Aurora, Neb.

His going was sudden, early Tuesday morning November 25, age 69 years, 8 months and 20 days. He leaves the three brothers, and a large circle of distant relatives and friends.

It is regretted that the youngest brother, Frank, of Aurora, Neb., found it impossible to be present at the services.

The following cousins from outside the community were in attendance:Robinson A., James L. and Jesse G. ROMACK of Sharpville, Ind.; Train C. ROMACK of Greenetown. Ind.; Wyatt SHUCK of Sharpville.; Elbert A. ROMACK of Ollie, la.:
William E. BLACK of Linby, and Robert COLLINS of Abingdon.

The services were held in the M. E. church in charge of the Rev. C. W. Cochran

Admin. note: Elijah was buried in the Packwood Cemetery, also known as Prairie Center Cemetery. He is in the Northeast section, next to his three brothers.

For clarification, Iowa Territory was organized in 1838; previous to this the lands belonged to Wisconsin Territory. Iowa did not become a state until 1846.
