Fairfield man dies in crash

A motorcycle accident in the 500 block of S. Main St. Friday night has claimed the life of a 19-year-old Fairfield man.

Melvin A. WIXOM, 309 W. Washington, was dead on arrival at Jefferson County Hospital Friday night following a one-vehicle accident at 11:13 p.m.

According to police reports, WIXOM was a passenger on a motorcycle driven by Nicky Charles Holt, 26, also of 309 W. Washington.

Police said the motorcycle was northbound on S. Main when it failed to negotiate a curve, hit a curb and upset on a sidewalk on the east side of the street.

Police reports said Holt stated a car passed him and Holt thought it forced him off the road.

Charges are pending against Holt, police said.

Holt was listed in satisfactory condition today at Jefferson County Hospital where he is reportedly suffering from multiple injuries.

Services for WIXOM are pending at the Hofbauer Funeral Home in Farmington.

WIXOM was born Oct. 12, 1959 at Hillsboro, the son of Edward WIXOM, Washington, and Barbara DEVORE, Cedar Rapids.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by four brothers and three sisters: Ed WIXOM of California; Tony WIXOM of Fort Madison; Criss WIXOM of Washington; Eric WIXOM, at home; Jeanie LEHMAN of Ottumwa; Spring WIXOM of Nashville, Tenn., and Donna WIXOM of Fairfield.

Also surviving are several step-brothers and step-sisters and the following grandparents: Peggy LUCAS, Hillsboro, and Mr. and Mrs. Melvin FERGUSON, Keokuk.

WIXOM is the second person to die in a Jefferson County traffic accident this year. The fatality is the first to occur in Fairfield since 1974.
