The Fairfield Ledger, Sep. 14, 1904, p. 5, col. 3. DEATH OF A PIONEER. Samuel Carr was born in Fayette county OH May 24, 1825 and died at his home in Polk township Sep. 6th. He came to IA in 1840 and began work by the month on a farm. In 1850 he was married to Martha Smales, a native of IL. She was his companion for half a century, dying last March. They were the parents of seven children. Two died in infancy. Harvey died in 1891, Mrs. Sarah Downey in 1894 and William in 1900, leaving a son and daughter, John Carr and Mrs. Nellie Mitchell, 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren to mourn the loss of one of the kindest of parents. Mr. Carr has resided in Polk township since 1863, where by his industry and frugality, he had made for himself and family a beautiful home, to which his many friends were always kindly welcomed. Funeral services were conducted at the home of W.A. Black and the remains laid to rest in the Abingdon cemetery by the side of loved ones gone before.
