Merle George Helgeland, 72, of Lake Charles, La., formerly of Fairfield, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, at the home of his son in Everett, Wash.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, with the Rev. Connie Markle officiating. Burial, with military honors by John Hyson Reneker Post No. 494 American Legion of Douds, will be in Mount Moriah Cemetery north of Douds.

Open visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with the family present from 7-8 p.m.

Memorials to Alzheimer's Association, diabetes research or Muscular Dystrophy Association and may be left at the funeral home or mailed to PO Box 38, Douds 52551.

Mr. Helgeland was born Nov. 7, 1931, in Ankeny, the son of Sig and Anna Eide Helgeland. He married Edna Trout Feb. 22, 1953, in Douds. She died April 29, 2002.

Mr. Helgeland graduated from Fairfield High School and University of Iowa. He was a Korean War veteran and was a district manager for CITGO Oil Company in Lake Charles, where he lived for 20 years.

He was a life member of American Legion, past president of Muscular Dystrophy Association for Southwest Louisiana and the Pioneer Club and was a member of the Propeller Club.

Survivors include two sons, Jon Helgeland and wife Becky of Everett, Wash., and Eric Helgeland and wife Barb of Chicago, Ill.; seven grandchildren; and three sisters, Gladys Pasch of Fairfield, Sonya Sanderson of Manchester, and Bernice Bergstrom of St. Cloud, Minn.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.
