The Fairfield Ledger, Sept. 15, 1897, Page 3, col. 5. A PIONEER WOMAN. Mrs.Jane Hill Ross died at the residence of her brother R.T. Gilmer in this city Wednesday. She was a pioneer woman of Jefferson County, her residence here dating back to the spring of 1837. Mrs. Ross was born in Adair county, KS December 4, 1815 and came to this county with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Gilmer, with the first settlement in Round Prairie Township. She was married to S.S. Ross Aug. 24, 1855 and the husband died at Eddyville Sep. 26, 1856. She has made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Gilmer ever since. Mrs. Ross was a very estimable woman and she had many warm friends among the earlier settler of Jefferson county..Funeral services were held at the Gilmer residence on East Burlington Street Friday, conducted by Rev. C.L. Coons and the remains were interred in this city (Evergreen Cemetery).
