“Charles J. Schafer, son of John and Mary Fox Scha(e)fer, was born in Fairfield, Iowa, Dec 23 1862, died Fri. May 23 1930 age 67 yrs & 5 months. He was (oldest?) of a family of 14 children and the second one to the children to die. His brother Joseph preceded him in death. His brothers and sisters are: Mrs. Thomas Emery, Pleasant Plain, Iowa; David and Will and Mrs. J. L. Roberts of Caldwell, Idaho; John T., Portland, Ore.; Mrs. Eva Schafer of Chicago; Mrs. Boyd Hicks, Mrs. John Gilbert, Mrs. Mary Simmons and Walter of Fairfield, Iowa; Otto Schafer of Eldon, Iowa, and Mark of Wellman. He married Iva Dickinson Dec 5 1891 and three children blessed the union: Blanche L. Ragan of Metz, Mo.; Fred of No. Dak., and Dale of Fairfield, Iowa. All of them, with the wife, remain. He has spent most of his life in Iowa but resided in Missouri for a time. He farmed in the McDowell Chapel neighborhood north of Fairfield a number of years before he came to reside in Fairfield about three months ago. Heart trouble. Member Methodist Church at McDowell’s Chapel. He also leaves his stepmother, Mrs. Amanda Schafer, who was very kind to him and did all she could to be to him a mother. Also 12 grandchildren. Funeral at McDowell Chapel Sunday May 25 2:30 p.m.”
