The Fairfield Ledger, Jan. 9, 1901, Page 3, col. 3. DIED from PARALYSIS. John McWhirter died in this city Friday. Deceased was a native of County Antrim, Ireland, born in October 1818. He came to the United States Sept. 17, 1840 and resided for three years at Baltimore MD. In 1843 he came to Jefferson County and with the exception of three or four years spent in California about 1849, had resided in this community continuously until his death. He was married to Catherine Gift on July 20, 1854 and his wife is still living. Six children survive the father--Mrs. George E. Allen, Mrs. J.M. Calhoun, and Mrs. J.C. McDonald of this city; Miss Nina McWhirter of St. Joseph MO, Mrs. J. Egbert Allen of St. Louis, MO and Glenmore McWhirter of Toledo OH. All were present at the burial of their father. For many years Mr. McWhirter lived on a farm in Fairfield township, but his home had been in this city for some time past. He was a man of quiet and unobtrusive manner, had many friends among the older residents of the county, and was very generally respected by those who knew him. The remains were interred in this city Monday morning, Rev. J.F. Magill conducting.
