Barbara Etta SMITH

Barbara Etta SMITH, 92, of Keosauqua died at 7:25 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

A funeral is at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua with the Rev. Phil Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Birmingham.

Visitation will open at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with family present from 5-7 p.m.

Memorials to Good Samaritan Society-Van Buren or a health care fund for Mrs. SMITH's great nephew Hollin DUNNING may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 2393 Fern Ave., Waverly 50677.

Mrs. SMITH was born Jan. 14, 1920, in Canton, Ill., the daughter of John A. and Lydia C. LINGENFELTER HAYNES. She married Richard Scott POLLITT Nov. 8, 1939, in Palmyra, Mo. He died May 15, 1944. She married Orril SMITH May 26, 1948, in Keokuk. He died Nov. 25, 1984.

She moved to Henry County to live with her parents shortly after her first husband's death. The SMITHs lived west of Lockridge, on a farm near Birmingham and in Birmingham. She moved to Country Lane Apartments in Keosauqua in 1985 and to Good Samaritan Society-Van Buren in Keosauqua in 2000.

She was a farm wife and was well-known for her gardens. She canned and froze the produce.

The SMITHs were foster parents to nearly 50 children. Many of them stayed in contact with her through the years. She also provided daycare for many area children.

Survivors include three sons, John G. POLLITT and spouse Sandy of Keokuk, Richard S. POLLITT and spouse Pam of Waverly and Charles L. SMITH of Fairfield; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers, Glenn, Butler, John, Henry, Raymond, Gleason and Alva HAYNES, three sisters, Coletha MILLARD, Maggie BOLLINGER and Abby SIMPKINS and a granddaughter, Lori Ann POLLITT.
