Jack CARLSON

Jack CARLSON, 78, of 2071 Libertyville Road died at 5:05 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, at Jefferson County Hospital.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Raymond Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ken Kent officiating. Cremation will follow the service, with interment of cremains at a later date at Evergreen Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials have been established to First United Methodist Church of Fairfield Senior Citizen Center.

Mr. CARLSON was born June 5, 1922, in Fairfield, the son of Carl A. and Mona May MILES CARLSON. He married Margaret McKEE Sept. 7, 1941, in Memphis, Mo.

Mr. CARLSON was a lifetime resident of Fairfield. He was a veteran of World War II and spent three years in the European theater of operations with the 843rd Aviation Engineers assigned to the 8th Air Force.

After the war, he returned to work at Louden Machinery Company as a certified welder until 1950. He then worked for Prudential Insurance Company until 1958. From 1958 until 1961, he developed Green Acres Subdivision in the southwest part of the city. In 1961, he purchased and developed the 120 acres west of Fairfield known as Suburban Heights and continued to build several homes in the Fairfield area.

In 1966, he worked as Parsons College as director of the physical plant until the college closed in 1973. In 1973, in association with Clark-Peterson Company, he built several nursing homes in southeast Iowa, including Nelson Nursing Home in Fairfield. In 1978, he purchased Fairfield Precast Concrete, which he owned until his retirement in 1987.

Mr. CARLSON was affiliated with First United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and a life time member of Walton Club. He served on the Park board and was past president for several terms of the Jefferson County Saddle Club.

He trained and showed horses and had owned many Quarter horses and Appaloosa horses. He enjoyed music, woodworking and metalworking.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Michael Kent CARLSON and his wife Debbie of Fairfield; one daughter, Sheryl Sue PAYNE and her husband Jeff of Fairfield; three grandchildren; three sisters, Ida LEE of Fairfield, Lucy DAVIES of Burson, Calif., and Mary Ruth OLSON of Burlington; and one brother, George CARLSON of Billings, Mont.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one daughter, Lori K. CARLSON.
