Thursday, 4 February 1988Hazel WILLIAMS dies at 96
BIRMINGHAM ---- Hazel WILLIAMS, 96, died at 10:55 p.m. Wednesday at Jefferson County Hospital after a long illness.
Services are set tentatively for 2 p.m. Sunday in Birmingham with burial at Maple Hill Cemetery. The family will be at Burch-Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Memorials have been established to the Cancer society, the Birmingham Cemetery, Fairfield Public Library, Birmingham Public Library and Birmingham Methodist Church.
Mrs. WILLIAMS was born Sept. 18, 1891 at MT. Zion, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth MOORE WILEY. She joined Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church early in life. She graduated from Birmingham High School in 1912. On May 8, 1912, she married Fred E. WILLIAMS in Fairfield. Most of her life was spent in Jefferson and Van Buren counties, except for a few years the couple lived in Montana and Washington. Returning to Iowa, they farmed in Van Buren County. He died in 1952. She moved to Birmingham in 1955 and for five years was a housemother at Parsons College. She moved to Logan Apartments in Fairfield in 1980. She was well known for her knitting and crocheting.
Surviving are seven children, Reva HUFF of Fairfield, Max of Cantril, Hazel Belle BAKER of Batavia, Fred of Sacramento, Calif., Roland of Blakesburg, Nellie BESWICK of Douds, Donald of Ottumwa; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ethel SWARTZ, 102, of Oskaloosa. A grandson preceded her in death.
