HEART ATTACK PROVES FATAL

Moses F. "Mode" BLACK, 87, former Fairfield businessman who returned to the city to make his home about a year ago, passed away in a hospital at Des Moines this morning.

Mr. BLACK went to Des Moines yesterday morning, and suffered a heart attack in the afternoon in the lobby of a hotel. He was taken to the Methodist hospital where he passed away at 4 a.m. today.

The body will be returned to Fairfield for burial. Last rites will be held at the Hoskins funeral home Monday at 2:30 p.m. with Dr. C. R. Douglas in charge. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery.

"Mode" BLACK, as his many friends knew him, was born in Jefferson county May 11,1860. He was united in marriage to Edith KIRKPATRICK of Fairfield, who preceded him in death June 20, 1945 (sic. possibly June 19, 1945, depending on the interpretation of her death "last night".)

Mr. BLACK was in business here in Fairfield for many years before he moved to Creston where he operated a laundry. He and W. W. Lewis operated a harness shop on the east side of the square where the Western Auto store is now located.

They started the business in 1893, and Mr. Lewis sold out to his partner in 1896. Later, the late Will Moore joined Mr. BLACK and the business was moved to the Moore building across the alley where the Bockes Hardware store in now located.

It was several years later that Mr. BLACK left Fairfield. He returned about a year ago, and since had occupied a room at the Walter Harrishome at 200 W. Washington street.

Mr. BLACK is survived by the following children: Ray, of Alameda, California; Mrs. Ray EMERY, Des Moines; Mrs. Joe STUNTZ (sic. a/k/a STRUNCE), Avon-by-the-Sea, New Jersey; and Mrs. Charles CAMPBELL, Omro, Wisconsin.
