Emma ROTH dies at 92

Emma A. ROTH, 92, former resident of Fairfield and a former longtime Fairfield school teacher, died at 5:30 a.m. Sunday at the Parkview Home in Wayland where she had been a resident for the past 6 1/2 years.

Prayers for a Christian Wake will be recited at the Raymond Funeral Home at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. William Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in East Pleasant Plain.

Before her retirement in 1959, Mrs. Roth had completed 46 years in her profession. She first taught in rural schools in Washington and Jefferson Counties for eight years before joining the Fairfield School District. She taught second grade in the same room at Washington school for 37 years after teaching one year at Logan.

Emma A. ROTH was born Oct. 1, 1889, in rural Jefferson County. She was the daughter of Andrew and Caroline STADELMAN ZIHLMAN who had emigrated to Iowa from Switzerland.

She was married to Oscar L. ROTH in Fairfield Oct. 22, 1912. They made their home in Wayland where he was a pharmacist. He died in 1916.

After her husband died Mrs. Roth and her infant son returned to Fairfield to make their home with her sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Ed ANGSTEAD.

She was a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College and Parsons College.

Mrs. ROTH was a long time member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Altar and Rosary Society, BPW and the Fairfield Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include her son, Richard, Burlington; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
