Mrs. Rachel COPPOCK PEIRCE, wife of Benjamin D. PEIRCE of this city, died at her home on Wednesday morning, after an illness of ten weeks from paralysis and the prevailing influenza. Deceased was born in Miama (sic - Miami) county, Ohio, October 8th, 1809, and was married to her now bereaved husband August 30th, 1827. They have been residents of Fairfield for about a third of a century, and during all those years have been noted for their charities and many kindnesses to those in distress. In former days the husband was an aggressive abolitionist and many is the poor black man who has found shelter beneath his roof while escaping from the master's lash to the free states of the north. In all this hazardous work he was assisted by his wife, whose opinions were almost as pronounced as his and whose womanly sympathies were even more fully enlisted in this work of humanity. Without children of their own, the home of these good people was ever an asylum for the fatherless and motheress, and many an orphan has known its kindnesses and hospitalities. The funeral occurred on Friday, and its services were those which Mrs. PEIRCE had selected when in good health. Two hymns of her choosing were sung and a brief sketch of her life was read by Robert F. Ratcliff, a friend of the family during all its years in Fairfield. Many old friends and neighbors were present to pay a last tribute of respect to all that was mortal of a good woman.
