Vernon C. LAWSON, 78, 101 North 11th St., died at 7:40 a.m. Thursday at Jefferson County Hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clair Odell and the Rev. Jerry Miller officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Odd Fellows rites by Jefferson Home. Visitation will follow. Memorials have been established to Jefferson Lodge No. 4 IOOF, the American Cancer Society and First United Methodist Church.
LAWSON was born Oct. 7, 1908 in Fairfield, the son of Clyde C. and Katherine (sic - Catherine) TURNER LAWSON. He married Wilma RABEL April 20, 1929 in Ottumwa. He lived his entire life in the Fairfield community. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Jefferson Lodge No. 4 IOOF, Iowa Encampment No. 6, Canton Biglow No. 6, Rebekah Lodge 96 and a past member of the water board. A longtime businessman, he owned and operated the Fairfield Motel and Restaurant.
Surviving are his wife; four sons, Gen. Richard L. LAWSON of Clifton, Va., E. Eugene LAWSON of Bettendorf, Maj. Gen. Warren G. LAWSON of Des Moines, Col. Roger W. LAWSON of Iowa City; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and a brother Robert E. LAWSON of West Burlington.
(I have been researching the LAWSON lineage for over 30 years.)
Admin. note: Buried in Lot Devotion B 116 - space 5. Wife Wilma lived to age 104 and was at the time of her death in February, 2012, the county's oldest resident. She is buried beside him.
