Front Page, Column 5FRANK GILMER, EARLY PIONEER PASSES AWAY
Resided in Fairfield nearly 50 years; services Wednesday
Frank GILMER, 81, pioneer Jefferson county resident, passed away at his home, 500 East Burlington street, Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Friday night he sustained a stroke from which he never fully recovered consciousness. Mr. GILMER suffered from rheumatism and had not left his home for the last few years.
Private funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the family residence in charge of Dr. Harry C. Whiting. Interment will be at the family lot in Evergreen cemetery.
Mr. GILMER is survived by three sons, Ralph and Robert of Fairfield and James of Chicago; two daughters, Ruth and Anna of Fairfield and a grandchild, Mrs. George GRIFFITH of Oskaloosa, who is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph GILMER. A son, Frank, died in infancy, in 1902, while a daughter Miss Mary Louise, passed away in September, 1910. Mrs. GILMER died Jan. 9, 1904.
Frank GILMER, son of Robert Tilford and Anna SCOTT GILMER, was born May 2, 1858, on the old GILMER homestead near Glasgow. This land was that which his father and grandfather, James GILMER, entered from the government.
Mr. GILMER'S father Robert, and grandfather, James GILMER came to Iowa from Adair county, Kentucky, in April, 1837. Mr. GILMER grew to manhood on this farm in Round Prairie township and assisted his father on the homestead. He and his parents moved to Fairfield in April of 1877 and resided at the preset home on East Burlington street.
Mr. GILMER and his father continued to farm after they moved to town. After his father's death in 1902 he continued to look after their land and continued in this occupation until 1920 when he retired from active work.
Mr. GILMER was married in Columbia, Kentucky, to Susan Kathryn HUGHES. She preceded him in death about 35 years ago.
Mr. GILMER studied medicine with Dr. D. H. Stever and Dr. P. N. Woods. He also attended Axline Academy and Mrs. Acheson's private school besides going to Parsons Academy. He was the nephew of Wilson Alexander SCOTT, donor of a large portion of the state capitol grounds at Des Moines.

... --Mrs. George GRIFFITH of Oskaloosa arrived in Fairfield Sunday called here by the death of her grandfather, Frank GILMER, 500 E. Burlington street. She will be at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. Ralph GILMER, 1001 E. Burlington street. Mr. GRIFFITH will come for the funeral which is to be held on Wednesday morning at 10:30 o'clock with private services at the home, 500 E. Burlington street. James GILMER and Mrs. GILMER of Chicago had arrived late Friday night just before the death of the former's father, he having been in his usual health.
