Merlin ELDER dies suddenly

Merlin Charles ELDER, 50, Route 3, Fairfield, died Sunday at 3 p.m. while at work at the Michigan Wisconsin Pipe Line pumping station north of Birmingham. His death was caused by an apparent heart attack.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Raymond Funeral Home. The Rev. Charles Kincaid will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to the First Christian Church or the Heart Association.

Merlin Charles ELDER was born Feb. 26, 1932, in Fairfield. He was the son of William and Nellie DAVISON ELDER. He was reared and educated in the Libertyville and Fairfield Communities where he lived all of his life. He graduated from the Libertyville High School.

He was employed as a machine operator at the pumping station for a number of years.

His marriage to Peggy L. SHIRKEY took place May 12, 1951, at the First Christian Church in Fairfield. She survives. He was a member of the First Christian Church.

In addition to his widow ELDER is survived by three daughters, Diane HOOTMAN, Keosauqua; Donna Rose, Fairfield; and Lori Jean at home; two grandchildren; a brother, Richard ELDER, Muscatine; and a sister, Marjorie WINTER, Libertyville. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
