Phyllis MERRILL

Phyllis MERRILL, 66, died today, Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1993, at her home in Fairfield after a 12-year battle with breast cancer.

She was born May 19, 1927, in Milwaukee, the daughter of Doris and Henry MERRILL. She grew up in Milwaukee and Pine Bluff, Ark. She graduated from Stevens College in Columbia, Mo., and from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She received a master's degree from Troy State University in Troy, Ala.

MERRILL taught school for 26 years in the Huntington Beach Union High School District in southern California. She spent the last 20 years of her career teaching chemistry at Fountain Valley High School, and retired in 1987.

She was an author of the text, "Chemistry, Experimental Foundations," at one time the largest-selling high school chemistry text in the non-communist world. She recieved the University of California-Irvine Award for Excellence in High School Chemistry teaching in 1983 and was twice nominated for the California Teacher of the Year by her district.

MERRILL enjoyed traveling and had visited 102 countries.

Surviving are her mother, Doris MERRILL of Fountain Valley, Calif.; two daughters, Carol JONES of Fairfield and Ara JOHNSON of Ashland, Ore.; two sons, Donald DIETZ of Montgomery, Ala., and Paul DIETZ of La Canada, Calif.; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph MERRILL of Long Beach, Calif., and Richard MERRILL of Walnut Creek, Calif.

Phyllis MERRILL

The memorial service for Phyllis MERRILL, 66, who died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1993, at her home in Fairfield, will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Barhydt Chapel at Maharishi International University.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County or the Noah's Ark Foundation.
