Dorothy Derby
November 19, 2003Dorothy Derby, 72, of Ottumwa, died at 8:10 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, at Ridgewood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Ottumwa.
The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Behner Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ed Newman officiating. Burial will be in Friends Cemetery in Richland.
Family visitation will be from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Mrs. Derby was born March 1, 1931, in Salisbury, Mo., the daughter of Orie Merrill and Mattie Gertrude Cloyd Carter. She married William Shoemaker Jr. He died in 1959. She married Stanley Derby. He died Oct. 26, 1981.
Mrs. Derby lived most of her life in Chariton County, Mo. She was a caregiver for senior citizens.
She was affiliated with the Baptist church.
Survivors include three sons, Terry Derby and wife Donna of Fairfield, Dale Derby and wife Pat of Hobbs, N.M., and David Derby and wife Imelda of Le Moore, Calif.; three daughters, Roxy Maness and husband Tony of Carrollton, Texas, Sharon Steele and husband Richard of Blanchard, Okla., and Karen Smith and husband Ron of Moravia; 21 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother, Paul Carter of Salisbury.
Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Steven Shoemaker; one granddaughter; two brothers, Earl and Jesse Carter; and two sisters, Ruby Stephenson Hendley and Elizabeth Porter.
