Mary Bell Griggs

Mary Bell Griggs, 91, died Friday, Nov. 14, 2003, at Jefferson County Hospital Long-term Care Unit.

The funeral was held at 10:30 a.m. today at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton, with the Rev. Syd McCrorey officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton.

Memorials may be made to Bethal Mission in Des Moines and Salvation Army in Newton.

Mrs. Griggs was born Feb. 28, 1912, in rural Newton, the daughter of William and Fern Holdefer-Gerhart. She married Cornie Kleinendorst July 20, 1929. He died in 1969. She married Leo Dillard Griggs in 1975 in Missouri. He died in 1985.

Mrs. Griggs was a homemaker.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Newton.

Survivors include three daughters, Sandra Eidahl and husband Davis of Richland, Barbara J. Shelton of Wytheville, Va., and Patricia L. Vermillion and husband Richard of Boone; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Betty Johnson of Shellsburg, Phyllis Thompson of Newton and Gladys Reynolds of Longview, Wash.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by one son, Rodger Lee Kleinendorst; four sisters; and one brother.
