James HARPER Rites Friday

James R. HARPER (sic. James Frederick HARPER), 72, Fairfield Route 3, died Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Jefferson County hospital. He had been ill for two years.

Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Raymond Funeral home in charge of the Rev. Donald A. Eagle. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

HARPER was born March 8, 1888 at Milan, Mo., the son of James and Alice HINES HARPER. He was reared and educated in Missouri. He was married to Elizabeth HULL in 1911. In 1931 (sic. Nov. 15, 1921) he was married to Elizabeth CRANDELL).

HARPER was a veteran of World War I. He is survived by the following brothers and sister: Henry HARPER, Nova HARPER and Charles HARPER, all of Fairfield; John HARPER, George HARPER and Mrs. Jennie LATHROP, all of Davenport.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, one infant child (sic. James HARPER, born July 12, 1912 and died Oct. 23, 1912, buried with his mother in an unmarked grave in Evergreen cemetery, Fairfield, Iowa), one brother and two sisters.

* Transcribed for genealogy purposes. I am not related to the person(s) mentioned.

Note: James Frederick HARPER was married to Elizabeth Margaret HULL HARPER on July 17, 1911 and they had a son that was born on July 12, 1912. Elizabeth died four hours after giving birth, and the little baby (later named James) died on October 23, 1912.

According to Jefferson county marriage records James Frederick HARPER married an "Elizabeth CRANDALL" on November 15, 1921. James' obituary stated that he married an "Elizabeth CRANDELL" in 1931. Subsequent notations found in an Evergreen cemetery transcription used "LANKFORD" for another married name for Elizabeth, stating that she died in January 1970. That notation indicated that her prior married name to that was "STINESPRING".

James Frederick HARPER was born March 8, 1888 and died on January 24, 1961. He is buried in an unmarked grave in Evergreen cemetery, Fairfield, Iowa. SDof01-001.

Admin. addendum: After checking her obituary, marriage records and the 1925 census (which lists parents' names), the second wife of James was Elizabeth LANKFORD STINESPRING CRANDALL. Her parents were James LANKFORD and Maranda ENLOW; she was first married to Eddie STINESPRING (June 1, 1904) who died Jan. 28, 1915, second to Walter CRANDALL (Sept. 21, 1915) who died Jan. 10, 1921, and third to James F. HARPER. She is buried in a now-unmarked grave (stone was either weathered away or gone by 2009) in Old Fairfield City Cemetery with her first husband.
