Naomi Roberta MAHON, 84, of Fairfield died Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997, in Crittenden Memorial Hospital in West Memphis Ark., where she had been a resident of a care center the last two years.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery at Birmingham. Open visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m.
Mrs. MAHON was born Sept. 16, 1913, at the family farm northwest of Birmingham, the daughter of Reuben and Dessie ROBERTS JOHNSTON. She attended country school at Crum and Liberty before graduating from Birmingham High School in 1930. She married Merle E. NELSON in 1930, and they had five children. After their separation in 1940, she farmed and provided for her family with the help of her sister Mary ELSON, and aunt and uncle Ethel and Glenn WILLIAMS. She married Harry Emmett MAHON, and they had one son. They continued farming south of Birmingham, moving to Fairfield after retiring. She had operated the Sew and Sew Shop in Fairfield and was of the Methodist faith. She moved to West Memphis when her health began to decline.
Survivors include her husband of Fairfield; four sons, Robert NELSON of Orlando, Fla., Richard NELSON of West Memphis, Larry NELSON of Sunnymead, Calif., and Alan MAHON of Theodosia, Mo.; 19 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary ELSON of Vinton. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Carol LAWSON and Desda SMITH; and one brother, Glenn L. JOHNSTON.
