John "Jack" William TAYLOR, 84, of 2235 Highway 34 East, Apt. 4, passed away at 10:16 a.m. June 25 at Parkview Care Center.
Jack was born September 7, 1927, in Washington, D.C. to Elwood William and Anna Veronica CANNING TAYLOR. His mother died when he was 5, and he and his sister moved to the Philadelphia area where they were raised by his maiden aunt, Isabel M. CANNING. Jack married Marcena "Marty" CROWL on December 3, 1951 at St. Mary Church in Fairfield.
Jack attended Tredyffrin Easttown High School, graduating in 1946. After high school, he attended Villanova University in Villanova, Pa., for two years. While attending Villanova, Jack joined the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps. He then transferred to Parsons College in Fairfield. He belonged to Alpha Kappa Chi and was a charter member of Tau Kappa Epsilon, a national fraternity. He graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business.
Jack was drafted into the U.S. Army in March 1951. He served his country honorably for two years in the Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC) during the Korean War. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan.
When he returned from service, he and Marty made their home in Bryn Mawr, Pa. There, Jack worked for the Globe Printing Company of Philadelphia. In 1955, the company transferred him to Detroit, Mich. where he was made general business manager for the company's divisions in Michigan and part of Indiana and Ohio. In December 1959, he resigned from his position, and he and Marty returned to Fairfield to raise their family in a small, college town.
In January 1960, Jack and Marty leased the Fairfield Golf and Country Club; they managed the club until July 1969. At that time, the couple took over operation and management of the infamous Broadway Grill; Marty's parents, Pat and Esther CROWL, opened the grill in 1947. In 1983, Jack and Marty moved their business around the corner to North Court St., opening Taylor's Off Broadway Grill. They retired in 1999.
Jack was a member of the Elks Club and the Fairfield Golf and Country Club. He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus. In his retirement, Jack enjoyed attending his morning coffee club at McDonald's. He had a deep-seated appreciation for the arts and education, and he wholeheartedly embraced the cultural diversity of Fairfield. Jack was a loving husband, father, grandfather and father to the community. He will be remembered for mixing a great drink and preparing and serving great food - especially his filet. He will also be remembered for his friendly, welcoming demeanor, his kindness, his fairness, and his sense of humor.
Jack is survived by his wife of Fairfield; four children, John William TAYLOR Jr. (Diane) of Green Bay, Wis.; Ann Renee TAYLOR of Washington, D.C.; Todd Patrick TAYLOR (Mary Jo) of Norfolk, Va; and Paul Michael TAYLOR (Kimberly) of Washington, D.C.; six grandchildren, Meghan Whitney TAYLOR VAN ITEN (Adam) of Menasha, Wis.; Brittany Lee TAYLOR of Washington, D.C.; Lindsay Kate TAYLOR of Chicago, Ill.; Brendan Patrick TAYLOR of Hickam Air Force Base, Honolulu, Hawaii; Megan Casey HURDLE of Norfolk, Va.; and Charles "Charlie" Patrick TAYLOR of Washington, D.C.; his sister, Anna "Nancy" Marie KING; three nephews, Stephen Charles KING, David Jeffrey KING, and Andrew Taylor KING; one niece, Barbara Ann KING; three great-nieces; three great-nephews; his beloved cat, Phoebe; and countless friends, many of whom he also considered family.
