Gareth 'Gary' LeMar RUTLEDGE

Gareth "Gary" LeMar RUTLEDGE, 79 of Pleasant Plain, died Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at home.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mr. RUTLEDGE was born June 26, 1932, the son of Emma HENDRICKS and Marion RUTLEDGE of Elkhart, Ind. He married Susan "Wyndi" A. LONG in 1981 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

He graduated from Elkhart High School in 1950. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in 1954 from DePauw University in Greencastle, Inc. He earned a master of arts degree in communications and human relations in 1974 from the University of Kansas.

Mr. RUTLEDGE served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1951 to 1977. After commissioning at graduation from Officers Basic School, he attended Naval flight training at Pensacola, Fla., then served as a flight instructor there for 3.5 years. His duties took him to Okinawa for two years; Vietnam in 1965-66; Iwakuni, Japan, for a year; as well as many stateside assignments, including seven years as an instructor of college level courses, first at the Atlantic Nuclear Weapons Training Center, then the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He lived in Hawaii for three years before his retirement from the Marine Corps.

He enjoyed flying and built his own biplane. He also enjoyed sailing, snow skiing and horseback riding.

Mr. RUTLEDGE and his wife moved to the Fairfield area in 2008 after living in Angel Fire, N.M., for 17 years.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gary E. RUTLEDGE and spouse Kim, in Georgia, and Thomas E. RUTLEDGE of Winterpark, Fla.; two daughters, Linda S. DELBRIDGE of Lake Tahoe, Nev., and Leslie C. BROWN and spouse Dean of Winterpark, Fla.; five grandchildren; and one brother, David PIPPENEGER of Elkhart.

He was preceded in death by one son, William L. RUTLEDGE.
