OBITUARY

MRS. JANE CROY

The death of Mrs. Jane CROY removes one of the oldest and best known residents of Jefferson County from this sphere of earthly activity.

Mrs. CROY was born in Huntington County, Pa., June 10, 1842. Her maiden name was Barbara Jane PARK, being a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James PARK.

In early life, she came with her parents and sisters, to this county, and she knew and endured the hardships of pioneer days, settling on a farm in the lower Richwoods community in Walnut township where she grew to womanhood and was united in marriage to Francis Marion CROY in 1865, making their home there for several years. They moved to Glendale, Iowa, in about the year of 1877 where the family home was until they moved to Fairfield where they resided until Mrs. CROY moved to Agency to be with her son Clarence.

She came to Fairfield over a year ago and spent her last days here, living the greater part of that time in the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Hoswell who are life long friends.

Although never of a robust nature she never muttered nor complained even in her last illness, which was of two months duration. She was always cheerful and thoughtful of those around her. She was more like a tired child falling to sleep, in the arms of Jesus, conscious to the last.

Mrs. CROY was baptized at an early age in life, and when she moved to Agency she was one of the charter members of the Christian church there. Being a great reader, she was well posted on the scriptures.

Her many friends will miss her beautiful thoughts, and kind words of sympathy and cheer, which she was always able to give to her sorrowing or unfortunate friends.

Despite her own afflictions and sorrows, which comes to all humanity, she would always rejoice in their good fortunes and weep with them in their sorrows. She was an example of faith, charity, love, benevolence, and patience, but loyalty was one of her greatest characteristics. Loyal to her home, loyal to her family and loyal to her friends and once her friend always her friend. And her many deeds of kindness will never be forgotten by us.

She leaves to mourn her loss, three children, Frank of Birmingham, Alabama; Clarence of this city, and Miss Maud of Chicago, who left her home there as soon as she learned of her mother's illness and has been constantly at her bedside together with Mrs. Hoswell and Mrs. Estella WEST, her niece, at whose home she has been the past several months. They all did everything that human power could do to alleviate her suffering, and she greatly appreciated their loving care.

Although being past fourscore years, yet she retained all of her mental faculties and although her voice was too weak to speak above a whisper yet she never failed to smile back her response when her friends came to her.

She also leaves two sisters: Mrs. Ellen GREEN of Lockridge, Iowa, and Mrs. Emma WILSEY of Cleveland, Ohio, and other relatives and a host of friends and neighbors.

Why should we mourn she is at rest, where sorrow and care can no more touch her peaceful breast.

Funeral services were held at the Christian church Saturday afternoon at two oclock in charge of Rev. R. H. Polly. Mrs. L. W. Van Nostrand and Mrs. Frank Pierson accompanied by Miss Hannah Van Nostrand sang "Face to Face" and "No Night There". The pall bearers were: F. G. Greber, Randy Greber, Chris Graber, Joseph Hickenbottom, Henry Diers and J. P. Brady. Interment was made in Evergreen cemetery.
