CARL HAWK

Williamm Carl HAWK was born in Tennessee on October 3, 1881 (sic - 1841). While still an infant he was brought to Iowa by his parents William and Rhoda HAWK.

Before he reached his second birthday his mother, who, before marriage, was Rhoda BLAKLEY, died. The heart-broken father with the young child returned to Tennessee and later was again married.

When Carl was about four years of age he was brought back to Iowa by his father and step mother who settled near the BLAKLEYS is a place known as Rich Woods, just 8 miles northeast of Fairfield. It was in this beautiful vale that Carl lived as a boy and developed into robust young manhood.

At the age of 25, on March 27, 1867 he was united in wedlock to Louisa MESSER by Rev. Axline the first pastor of the English Lutheran church of Fairfield. To this union only one child was born who died in early infancy. The bonds of affection between Mr. and Mrs. HAWK were extremely pronounced and sacred.

They lived together and were devoted to each other for a period of 59 years.

Mr. HAWK continued in his farming until 1902 when he came to Fairfield and moved to the residence on west Burlington street where he departed this life on Wednesday, April 7, 1926 at the age of 84 years, 6 months and 4 days.

He is survived by his beloved wife, one half brother, Stephen HAWK and two half sisters, Mrs. Louis LONG and Mrs. David LONG, one nephew, Mr. Rollie HAWK of Rich Woods, and two nieces, Mrs. George LESHER and Mrs. Harry LESHER both of North Dakota.

Mr. HAWK united with the English Lutheran church of Fairfield shortly after coming to this city and has remained a loyal member of the same to the day of his death.

He will long be remembered as one of the successful men of this community. He was a hard worker, a good manager, a fair and honest dealer, a cheerful and congenial friend, a devoted husband and loyal christian, henceforth there is laid up for him, we trust, a crown of righteousness which the lord the righteous judge, shall give him at that Last day.
